About R-124 refrigeration gas

R-124 (chlorotetrafluoroethane) is a

non-flammable, colorless, liquefied gas (an HCFC refrigerant) with a faint ether-like odor. It is primarily used as a retrofit replacement for R-114 in centrifugal chillers and high-ambient cooling applications.

Key safety and hazard information for R-124:

Hazards: Vapors are heavier than air and can cause suffocation by displacing oxygen in confined spaces. Rapid evaporation of the liquid can cause frostbite. Inhalation of high concentrations may cause anesthetic effects, central nervous system depression, and cardiac arrhythmia.
Environmental Impact: R-124 is an ozone-depleting substance (ODP of 0.022) and is regulated under the HCFC phaseout programs in many countries, including a ban on its production/importation in the US and Canada as of 2020. It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 609.

Handling & Storage:
- Use only with adequate ventilation.
- Avoid breathing gas and contact with eyes and skin.
- Do not apply direct flame to cylinders or store them in direct sunlight/heat above 120F (49C).
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including chemical goggles/face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, and self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency situations.

Fire/Explosion: The product is not flammable in air under normal conditions (ASHRAE A1 safety classification). However, if pressurized with air or oxygen, the mixture may become combustible. It may decompose on contact with flames or hot metal surfaces to produce toxic and corrosive products like hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen chloride.

Accidental Release: In case of a spill or leak, evacuate enclosed spaces and use floor-level forced-air ventilation to disperse the gas. Do not vent contents to the atmosphere; recover and reclaim unused product.
