About R 513A Refrigeration Gas
- R-513A (marketed as Opteon XP10 or Solstice 513A) is a non-flammable, low Global Warming Potential (GWP) azeotropic refrigerant blend used as a replacement for R-134a. It is a liquefied gas that acts as an asphyxiant in high concentrations and can cause freeze burns on contact.
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Information
Hazards Identification
- Physical State: Clear, colorless liquefied gas with a slight ethereal odor.
- Flammability: Non-flammable (ASHRAE A1 safety classification) under normal conditions, but mixtures with air or oxygen under pressure may be flammable or reactive.
- Health Hazards:
- Inhalation: Vapors are heavier than air and can displace oxygen, causing asphyxiation. High concentrations can cause anesthetic effects (dizziness, weakness, nausea, unconsciousness) and an abnormal, potentially fatal, heart rhythm. Skin/Eye Contact: Liquid contact can cause severe freeze burns (frostbite).Ingestion: Extremely unlikely in normal use.
- Environmental Hazards: A fluorinated greenhouse gas with a GWP of approximately 573 (IPCC AR5) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). Should not be released into the environment.
First Aid Measures
- Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If breathing is irregular or stops, perform artificial respiration and seek medical attention.
- Skin Contact: Immediately drench with running water for 10 minutes or longer. Do not use hot water. If frostbite occurs, seek medical attention.
- Eye Contact: Bathe eye with running water for at least 15 minutes, pulling eyelids up. Seek specialist medical attention.
- Ingestion: Not applicable for a gas.
- Note to Physician: Do not give adrenaline or similar drugs.
Handling and Storage
- Ensure adequate ventilation in storage and work areas, especially in confined or low places where heavy vapors might collect.
- Store in a cool, well-ventilated area below 52C (126F), away from heat sources, hot surfaces, and flames.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and low-temperature resistant gloves.
- Avoid contact with finely powdered metals (aluminum, magnesium, zinc), strong alkalis, and strong oxidizing agents.
Technical Data and Properties

Applications and Use
R-513A is primarily used as a high-performance, lower GWP alternative to R-134a in new and retrofitted systems, including:
- Medium- and high-temperature commercial and industrial direct-expansion (DX) refrigeration.
- Water and centrifugal chillers.
- Air conditioning and heat pumps.
- Medium-temperature circuits of two-stage hybrid cascade systems with CO2.
- It offers an excellent capacity and efficiency match to R-134a and is compatible with existing equipment and POE oils, often allowing for easy retrofitting.
