About R449 Refrigeration Gas

R449A is a refrigerant blend known as Opteon XP40 that is a low-global-warming-potential (GWP) replacement for refrigerants like R404A and R507. It is a four-component HFC/HFO blend consisting of R32, R125, R1234yf, and R134a. R449A is non-flammable and has low toxicity (ASHRAE safety class A1) and is used in commercial, low- to medium-temperature refrigeration applications such as supermarkets, cold storage, and condensing units.

Key properties and characteristics

Composition: A blend of four refrigerants: R32 (24.3%), R125 (24.7%), R1234yf (25.3%), and R134a (25.7%) by mass.
Environmental impact: It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of around 1397 (based on IPCC AR4) and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0. This represents a significant reduction compared to R404A and R507.
