About R-410 refrigeration gas
R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, a blend of difluoromethane (R-32) and pentafluoroethane (R-125). Its technical properties include a boiling point of
48.5
C and a vapor density of 3.0
(air=1), while its safety precautions involve avoiding exposure to high temperatures, open flames, and certain reactive metals to prevent the formation of toxic decomposition products like hydrofluoric acid (HF). In case of exposure, skin and eye contact can cause frostbite or irritation, and high concentrations of the gas can cause asphyxiation by displacing oxygen. Technical properties
- Composition: A near-azeotropic blend of 50% R-32 and 50% R-125.
- Boiling point: 48.5C (at 1,013 hPa).
- Vapor pressure: 215.3psia at70F (21.1C).
- Vapor density: 3.0(air = 1.0).
- Specific gravity: 1.066(water = 1.0) at25C.
- Odor: Faint ethereal odor.
- Global Warming Potential (GWP): 2088(based on IPCC-AR4 report).
- Health hazards:
- Inhalation: High concentrations can cause asphyxiation by reducing oxygen levels, leading to symptoms like dizziness, loss of coordination, and, in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmia or unconsciousness.
- Skin/Eye contact: The liquid can cause frostbite. Repeated skin contact can lead to irritation and defatting.
- Fire and explosion hazards:
- The gas is not flammable at ambient temperatures and pressure, but can become combustible when mixed with air under pressure and exposed to ignition sources.
- Contact with certain reactive metals (e.g., finely powdered aluminum, magnesium, zinc) at high temperatures can cause an explosive or exothermic reaction.
- Handling precautions:
- Handle in a well-ventilated area to avoid asphyxiation.
- Avoid contact with open flames, hot surfaces, and strong ignition sources.
- Protect containers from direct sunlight and temperatures above 50C (122F).
- Do not pierce or burn cylinders, even when empty.
- Protective equipment:
- Wear chemical safety goggles.
- Use butyl rubber gloves when handling to prevent frostbite or irritation.
- First aid:
- Inhalation: Move the person to fresh air. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
- Skin/Eye contact: For frostbite, gently rewarm the affected area with lukewarm water. For irritation, flush with water and seek medical advice.
- Disposal: Dispose of in accordance with national and local regulations. Do not vent into the atmosphe
